Bank of Israel Governor Fischer to Woo China on Iran

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has decided to send Bank of Israel Governor Stanley Fischer to China to try to convince the government there to support restrictions against Iran in the face of its insistence on improving nuclear weapon capacity.

China has been the least cooperative member of the United Nations Security Council, which has discussed placing crippling sanctions on Iran. It has the power to veto sanctions even if all other Security Council members support them.

Fischer is a respected figure in China. He has dealt with the state in the past when he served on the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.

Accompanying Fischer will be previous IDF Chief of Staff, Minister for Strategic Threats Moshe Yaalon. Yaalon will be entrusted with the army-intelligence aspects of the visit. He will try create clear to the Chinese how close Iran is to acquiring nuclear weapons, and how such a situation could threaten the entire world and not just Israel.

If the Iranian nuclear weapon plot is not foiled and Iran arms itself with nuclear weapons, the Middle East will be destabilized and a regional nuclear arms race will start, the Israeli delegation will tell the Chinese.

The two nations will also discuss strengthening trade ties between them.
