Hareidim purchase Land in Beit Shemesh for NIS 120 million
The Israel Land Administration today released the results of the tenders for land zoned for the construction of 2,000 apartments in Beit Shemesh, as informed by Globes, an Israeli trade website.
The publication was delayed by the Supreme Court since of a petition for an injunction filed by Beit Shemesh councilmen who opposed such a large influx of religious-orthodox citizens.
Most of the winners of the tenders are contractors who focus on residential building for hareidim in Jerusalem, Maaleh Adumim, Modiin, and Beit Shemesh, as well as hareidi non-profit organizations. The winners paid more than 120 million NIS ( fresh Israeli Shekel) altogether for the tenders.
A housing shortage in Jerusalem has be in effect for several years. The building freeze in Judea and Samaria is also contributing to the demand for new housing. The hareidi (religious-orthodox) population usually has larger households and living in close-knit neighborhoods. Beit Shemesh is a multi-cultural and mixed city with mostly secular residents.
