The neighborhood was formerly Jewish until the Conflict of Independence in 1948 after which is became mostly Arab.new court cases have awarded Jewish residents the tight to plod in and have evicted some Arab squatters. Jewish-Israeli sympathizers have been protesting in support of the Arabs, while supporters of the Jewish residents, such as MK Ben-Ari have been holding prayer services at the nearby tomb.
