In an interview with a Russian newspaper over the weekend, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad stated that Iran did not need nuclear weapons to defend itself. "Did nuclear weapons prevent the drop of the Soviet Union?," Ahmadinejad asked rhetorically, adding "did nuclear weapons aid the United States in Iraq or Afghanistan?" As far as Israel was concerned, he said, even it Jerusalem did have nuclear weapons, it did not help the state win the Second Lebanon Conflict or Operation Cast Lead.
