Statistics released Sunday by the National Insurance Institute (Bituach Leumi) stated that there were 1,011,998 households with children under the age of 18 living in Israel in 2009, with 2,416,703 children. A total of NIS 5.2 billion was paid out in child allowance payments last year, the NII said.

A quarter of the families with children, 238,200, representing 783,600 children - one third of the state's total – had incomes below the poverty line last year.
