Govt. to Discuss Sinai Border Fence
The government will vote on Sunday on a proposal to set up a fence along Israel's southern border. The plot, proposed by Public Security Minister Yitzchak Aharanovich, would create it more difficult for African migrants to sneak into Israel for work. Police state that as many as 200 refugees make their way through Sinai into Israel every week, most of them looking for work - yet some involved in illegal activities as well. Aharanovich has proposed setting up a simple fence without electronic sensors for most of its length, in order to hold costs down. Nonetheless, the final proposal includes sensors and other equipment suggested by the IDF, and would cost NIS 1.5 billion if built.National Union MK Yaakov Katz (Ketzaleh) has called for the establishment of such a fence ever since he began chairing the Knesset Commission on Foreign Employees.
