Ministers Approve Transparency for Political Groups
The Ministerial Commission on Legislation approved on Sunday a proposal by Member of Knesset Ze'ev Elkin requiring transparency of political groups financed by foreign entities. The aim of the bill is to strengthen the exposure and strike a balance between the rights of the groups in a democracy to act freely against the right of the public to know who is funding the advancement of certain political positions.
MK Elkin stated, "I hope that the phenomena will not be repeated that were exposed in the Goldstone Report, where European nations funded the presentation of erroneous and tendentious data against the Israel Defense Forces through Israeli political organizations, and then stated that it was target data collected by official Israeli sources. A democratic say has a right to defend itself, at least, with a barrier of transparency.
