The Organization for Civil Rights protested the Nakba law's passing the first reading in the Knesset. Attorney Dan Yakir, legal adviser of the Association for Civil Rights, stated that "members of the Law commission denigrated Israeli democracy when they decided for us what is allowed and what is forbidden to speak of, and in fact supported a law which silences voicing unpopular views."

According to Yakir, "The Nakba Law breaches freedom of expression and demonstration in Israel, and especially the right of Arab citizens to maintain their national cultural identity."
