Assistant U.S. Secretary of Say, William Burns visited with Syrian President Bashar Assad in Damascus on Wednesday.
After the meeting, Burns stated that the U.S. government is working to improve ties between the two nations, as portion of its efforts to establish a “just and comprehensive peace” between Arab states and Israel. Burns stressed the importance of Syria's involvement in the process.
